Two teams from the Gauteng Police competed in the recent Inter-Provincial Volleyball Tournament, and did very well.
The tournament took place in Polokwane, and Gauteng had a men and women’s team competing. The teams included players from Honeydew, Randfontein, Muldersdrift, Kagiso and the West Rand Cluster. There were also players from the East Rand.
The men’s team had quite the dream tournament, and coasted to the finals by defeating Mpumalanga, North West, Limpopo and the Free State in their pool matches.
They were very focused and disciplined during their semifinal against the team from the Northern Cape, which ensured they walked away with a 3–1 victory.
The final was a rematch of the previous year, with Gauteng squaring off against Kwazulu-Natal. Gauteng was the favourite, and showed why, with an incredibly dominant display, defeating Kwazulu-Natal with a score of 3–1, which resulted in them being crowned as the 2018 champions.
The women’s team beat Mpumalanga, North West and Free State in their pool matches, losing only to Kwazulu-Natal. They squared off against the Eastern Cape in the semifinals and won with a score of 3–1.
Unfortunately they struggled in their final game against the defending champions, Kwazulu-Natal, and had to be content with a silver medal.
At the conclusion of the tournament, the National Volleyball teams were announced, and seven of these players were from the Gauteng team:
• The men’s representatives are Sergeant Balgovind (Ekhuruleni Central Cluster), Constable Machaba (Tshwane North Cluster), Personnel Officer Shaw (10111) and Admin Clerk Baloyi (Provincial Head Office: Sport).
• The women’s representatives are Warrant Officer Vadivalu (Provincial Head Office: CR & CSM), Constable Montshiwa (Carletonville) and Constable Kau (Ekhuruleni Central Cluster).
