Today in History: Nelson Mandela joins Queen Elizabeth for a coach ride

Nelson Mandela and Queen Elizabeth II were friends during and even after his presidency, with both of them often referring to the other as a friend.

Their relationship was so positive that, even two years after stepping down from his presidency, Mandela visited London, and was treated to a coach ride with the Queen. He arrived in England on 9 July 1998 for a four-day visit, and on the fourth day (12 July) he concluded his visit to England by accompanying Queen Elizabeth II on a coach drive through the streets of London.

Mandela had stayed at Buckingham Palace as an honoured guest of the Queen and addressed a joint meeting of Parliament at a packed Westminster Hall. In a BBC documentary, Mandela repeatedly referred to Queen Elizabeth II as “my friend, Elizabeth”.
