Living with cancer is not the end of the world. That’s what the Rainbow Samaritans try to teach cancer patients and their family members during their West Rand chatroom meetings at Westview Clinic in Florida.

The association held its one-of-a-kind social support group meeting on 12 May, when attendees were encouraged to have hope by Lara Bonetto, a volunteer counsellor and life coach. Lara shared some words of wisdom and spoke about items that cancer cannot take away from a person, such as good memories. She also talked about having courage and restoring hope.

According to the Rainbow Samaritans’ constitution, the association operates under the auspices of the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) and provides food at different levels of need as well as staying in touch with other associations with similar interests.

Zac Grobler, a member of the association, elaborated more on how they assist cancer patients in the community. “The chatroom only looks after cancer patients who are on prescribed medication. The Rainbow Samaritans care for people suffering from cancer who do not have enough food. We get the names of the people in need and go out and buy them food,” said Grobler.

While the main focus is on restoring hope to cancer patients, the association also enjoys fun activities such as celebrating birthdays and having guest speakers.
