Update on the power outage

According to Ward 70 councillor, Caleb Finn, the mobile transformer brought in to alleviate the power outage in the Florida area had to be shut down for safety reasons, namely the oil leak that happened this morning.

Eskom technicians were called in and tests were conducted to identify the faulty component causing the oil leak.

Finn mentioned that the replacement part is on its way from another Eskom branch in Mpumalanga. It should arrive late this afternoon, after which tests will again be conducted to make sure the unit is safe to carry power.

“It is important to note that this is an extremely complex operation and that technicians have to be extremely careful not to cause any electrical spikes on the currently functional transformer or the mobile transformer as this could lead to either or both becoming damaged and leave us in a worse position.

“The City of Johannesburg has an electrical infrastructure maintenance backlog of approximately R19 billion, which includes the need to replace the transformers at Sentraal Substation, which were installed during the 1970s. This situation is not unique to our area, but applies to the whole city and in many cases other cities as well,” he said.

City Power has implemented a load rotation programme, during which certain areas will have power for about four to five hours. Thereafter they will lose power while other areas come back on line for the same length of time. This process will be repeated again and again, until full power to all areas can be restored.

City Power spokesperson Sol Masolo said, “We are still running tests which could continue through out the night, maybe till tomorrow morning. We are trying by all means to keep to the four to five hours rotation schedule. It will take a maximum of 14 days for the problem to be completely fixed”.
