Oil leakage on the new transformer

Technicians have detected an oil leakage from the new mobile transformer at Sentraal Substation. This will delay the power-restoration time.

On Sunday, 15 April, Ward 70 councillor Caleb Finn made a public announcement, saying, “The mobile transformer is now set up and has passed all the necessary tests, it has been connected and is running, however it requires 24 hours to make sure that it is ‘warmed up’ and ready to handle the load. Load cannot be placed on this transformer until it is ready.”

He continued to say, “If all goes well Load Rotation will be ended tomorrow (Monday, 16 April) evening.

Myself and MMC for Environment, Infrastructure and Service Delivery, councillor Nico de Jager visited the Sentraal Substation earlier this evening where we witnessed the hard work and dedication of technicians from both the Eskom and City Power technicians. Thank you to the teams for working around the clock for the past three days to deal with this outage.”

However, on Monday, De Jager said that technicians detected an oil leak on the new mobile transformer at Sentraal Substation and had to switch it off. Eskom has started with the process of finding and restoring the leak. Rotational load-shedding will continue until the leak can be resolved.

A follow-up article will be published about the progress being made.
