“We received many donations, which we handed over to Willie, and we thank everyone who assisted,” said a happy Fred Hayward.
Fred, who is Willie’s brother, is overwhelmed by the community’s support after the family shared Willie’s story. “Willie, 41, was involved in a car crash 20 years ago, and sustained serious brain damage which left him paralysed. He cannot speak or do anything for himself, so he totally depends on help with basic things such as eating, washing and getting dressed,” he explained.
“Willie is doing very well, and we were lucky enough to find a place for him to stay in Randfontein. However, it is unfortunately too far from his family, and we are still trying to find him a place for him to stay in Roodepoort. We hope this will happen soon,” Fred said.
The Haywards are in the process of establishing a non-profit organisation (NPO), which will not only benefit Willie, but will offer assistance to others who are in the same situation.
“The main aim of the NPO is to raise money for Willie’s day-to-day care, but we also want to help others in similar circumstances – not only the patients, but their families as well – by motivating, supporting, providing financial assistance and much more,” said Fred.
