The Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation recently hosted a Recreation Summit in Ward 82.

The aim of the summit was to emphasise recreation and highlight the use of community centres and sports facilities to get residents active and motivate them to participate in activities of their choice such as arts, aerobics, karate, cooking and so much more.

The day’s proceedings were started by the councillor for Ward 82, Susan Stewart, who welcomed everyone to the Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre.

One of the guest speakers was legendary runner Bruce Fordyce who used the opportunity to discuss the importance of being active. He also talked about the Parkrun in South Africa. Dr Tshidi Gule spoke about the importance of physical activities and a healthy lifestyle for young and old.

There were also speakers on Early Childhood Development and the University of the Third Age (U3A) talked about the importance of senior citizens staying active.

René Benjamin, the councillor for Ward 71, also attended the event, and used the opportunity to discuss the possibility of starting a Parkrun in her ward with Bruce Fordyce.

“I am currently working with Bruce to establish a Parkrun for our ward and once the details have been sorted, further information will be provided,” she said.
