Future Nation’s Grade 8s dance to the rhythm of maths

The Grade 8 learners at Future Nation School had a lot of fun when they completed their first Mathematics project for the academic year.

This project, which teaches topics in Mathematics and a little in English, requires the learners to use mathematical elements to create a song. This song, which is an annual project undertaken by learners at the school, needs to display their creativity. They start the song by analysing popular lyrics in terms of parts and figures of speech, which then enable them to design the school song with the assistance of the language teachers.

The activity assists the learners with learning how to tally the mean, median, mode and range of the songs, and to create line and bar graphs to summarise the data. With the help of a dancer, they then create a music video with dance choreography, where they learn Mathematics co-ordinates theory by tracking their movements.

At the start of the project, learners are divided into six groups consisting of project managers, videographers, dancers, singers/ songwriters, beat makers and promoters. Each of them then works on a different element that will make up the school’s song for the year.
