“We want to instill a culture of awareness that there are needs all around us, and that animals also need – and deserve – love,” said Felicity Ingram.

The Future Nation Pre-school in Fleurhof has decided to launch an initiative in which it will be collecting much-needed items for the Roodepoort SPCA. Felicity, a Montessori Directress at the school, explained, “The animals at the Roodepoort SPCA have been abandoned, abused and cannot fend for themselves. We want to remind people that these animals deserve decent care, warm shelter, food, water and care. That is why we launched the collection initiative.”

They are appealing to the community to donate old blankets, towels, pillow cases, old shoes (which make good chew toys for the kennelled dogs), as well as petfood to help the SPCA. “The staff specifically requested toys, as the dogs become restless and bored, resulting in them crying the whole day and night. Toys will help to keep them occupied,” Felicity said.

The donations can be dropped off at the school, situated on the corner of Halite and Hyacinth Roads, Fleurhof and Felicity said, “Although we will be doing the initial handover to the SPCA on 16 February, we will be accepting donations on an ongoing basis, as this is a community awareness initiative.”

She added that, should people not be able to contribute any of the above-mentioned items, they can still do their bit by visiting their local SPCA and familiarising themselves with the work they do, adopt a pet or make a small donation – either financially or in the form of pet goods.
