During the Record’s investigation into the Johnny Vance assault case, and the towing industry in general, the term ‘999’ (or a ‘triple nine’) has surfaced again and again.

Vance was allegedly assaulted by three employees of A1 Assist/ Help 24, Rudi Steynberg, Stevie Nel and Wilhelmpie Nel, on 18 October.

It is believed that a ‘999’ was called on the evening of Vance’s assault. It can now be said with almost 100 per cent certainty that a 999 is a call to sort out troublemakers. Via a whistle-blower third party, the Record asked unsuspecting tow-truck drivers what the call means. This is what they had to say:

“Go and help when there is trouble, and hit if it is necessary.”

“Needs back-up. We are in a fight. Most of the time it’s swearing and intimidation and one guy gets ‘sorted out’.”

“Everyone must come and f**k up some guy who is towing outside his area.”

The Record also obtained a recording of a telephone conversation between an area manager of one of the big towing companies and the owner of a smaller towing company. During the conversation, the area manager admits that his boss pays him to keep other towing companies out of a specific area. Once again, the term ‘999’ surfaced.
