The councillor for Ward 83, Suzanne Clarke, was quite happy with the number of residents who attended the recently held public meeting.

The meeting took place at the Klein Helderkruin Retirement Village and was attended by approximately 50 to 100 residents. “Some of the senior citizens also attended, and participated fully in all the discussions,” Suzanne said.

Matters discussed during the meeting include the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), election of a new ward committee member for the Development portfolio, and the introduction of the new ward committee members.

“Residents were briefed on the importance of the IDP as well as what the plan entails. They were reminded that it was imperative for everyone residing in the ward to participate in this process to help with the development planning.

Each resident received a form on which they could list all the proposed improvements they would like to see in the ward,” she said.

She added that one of the major concerns raised during the meeting involved Vumatel and the poles they have used for the fibre optic cables. “Residents wanted to know who will be paying for the damages, should a pole fall over. I spoke to the Head of Department at Vumatel, who assured me that they do have insurance for issues like that, but, in a case where a pole is deliberately damaged, they would not be responsible,” she said.

The new ward committee members were also introduced to the residents. They are:

• André Westervelt (Development Planning)

• Rijkent Mulder (Public Safety)

• Luyanda Mngadi (Community Development 1)

• Irene Mngadi (Community Development 2)

• Byron Pretorius (Environment)

• McKinley Mitchell (Infrastructure and Services)

• Christy du Plessis (Health and Social Development)

• Nthabiseng Khunong (Housing)

• Jessica Keune (Economic Development)

• TJ van der Merwe (Transport)
