#PelserTrial postponed for last witnesses, judgement and sentencing

At about 2.40pm yesterday (5 October), the Marthinus Pelser trial was adjourned and postponed.

During the day’s proceedings the officer who initially investigated baby Deon’s death, detective Constable Motaung, the officer who took over the investigation from Motaung, Warrant Officer Lesejane and the complex security guard who was on duty on the night of the murder, Decent Kunene gave their testimonies.

Trial Day 4: #PelserTrial: Results of handwriting analysis finally revealed

In Motaung and Kunene’s cases it was only to hear their version of the events of the day in question.

But with Lesejane the State only focused on the handwriting analysis. When Lesanje read the findings in the report, it was finally revealed that the author of the disturbing notes that were left in a yellow book, which was found on the kitchen counter the day of the murder, was indeed Pelser. The Defence tried to point out that Lesejane did not follow the required procedures when handling the evidence, but they failed.

Trial Day 4: #PelserTrial: “If he could do that to a baby, [imagine] what would he do to us?”

The State still wishes to call the pharmacist – Deon’s mother, Bianca Rothman’s former employer – as well as the pathologist to testify, but they were not available yesterday. Due to the court roll being extremely full, the case had to be postponed to 11 December to be concluded on 14 December.
