With the help of City Power Risk Management and community members, a suspect was apprehended and arrested for vandalism.

“Well done to the City Power staff and community members who worked together to ensure the suspect was apprehended.

I also want to thank the patrollers from Florida Block Watch who responded to the situation,” said Caleb Finn, Ward 70 councillor.

According to a Facebook message from Finn, the cause of two power outages in the Florida North area recently was vandalism. “The first outage occurred at approximately 3pm on 9 September. When City Power technicians arrived at the Beacon Road substation, they noticed someone running away and realised the substation had been vandalised. They repaired the damage and power was restored,” the post reads.

But, the vandal was not finished yet. Finn said the power went out again at approximately 5.50pm, which prompted him to notify the City Power Hamberg Depot, and they responded within minutes.

This time, when the technicians arrived, bystanders told them about sounds they had heard from inside the substation. “The technicians, with the assistance of the community members, surrounded the brick building, opened the substation and caught the suspect red-handed vandalising the substation,” said Finn.

After the suspect had been subdued, City Power Risk Management was contacted and Mafoko Security was dispatched. “They facilitated the process of arrest and ensured a case was opened at the Florida Police Station,” he said.Finn concluded by thanking everyone involved and reminded residents to remain alert and report all vandalism or tampering with the City Power network to Risk Management on 011 490 7911/7900.
