17 August is is National I Love My Feet Day, a day that was created to remind us to appreciate the value of our feet as they always carry our weight without ever complaining.

With our feet fulfilling the role of our primary mode of transport, we often forget how hard they work while they quietly and faithfully help us stand, walk, run, play sports, skip and jump. They take us to school and work and withstand all the things we do in our everyday lives, accomplishing a lot of things our hands cannot.

It is important to take care of our feet to prevent long-term problems caused by wear-and-tear, disease, bad circulation and ill-fitting shoes.

Here are some easy ways to take care of your feet:

• To reduce swelling, elevate them when you sit and relax.

• To aid circulation you can stretch, walk, have a gentle massage or a warm foot bath, just make sure your feet are dry before putting on your shoes.

• When walking outside make sure to wear shoes to offer more protection to your feet.

• Most of the foot problems experienced by adults can be prevented by wearing shoes that fit properly with good arch supports.

• Foot massages and regular pedicures can also reduce foot problems.

• A visit to a podiatrist can help to relieve persistent foot pain.

Remember that healthy feet are happy feet. Celebrate today by going for a relaxing foot massage or treating yourself to a pedicure. Use this opportunity to go out and buy yourself a new pair of shoes, all in the name of keeping your feet healthy and happy!
