The mother of the three girls who were locked inside a cage-like room at Roodepoort Police Station after their parents had been arrested, said the youngest, 6, is not doing well.

The same girl was raped by Mathys van Zyl three years ago while her then seven-year-old twin sisters witnessed her horror ordeal. Van Zyl was later sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment. According to the mother the latest incident has traumatised the three girls all over again, but the youngest is suffering the most. She said all three girls have nightmares but the youngest girl’s are worse because in her dreams she relives being raped.

The mother said she did not know what progress her lawyer, James Human had made with suing the Ministry of Police or the current status of the South African Human Rights Commission’s investigation.

According to Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Captain Nonhlanhla Khumalo, the internal investigation has not been finalised yet.

Human was not available for comment.
