There was a degree of closure for the Bright family on 24 July when Roodepoort Regional Magistrate Delize Smith handed down a sentence of 25 years’ imprisonment to one of the two men who hijacked the family on 15 April 2016.

Marilize Bright, her son Damian, daughter Abigail and baby Marinique were in the vehicle that was hijacked on the corner of Cutten and Kilburn Streets. After a wild car chase the hijackers lost control of the vehicle on Louis Botha Avenue. The family was seriously injured and spent weeks in hospital.

Unfortunately, the other accused is currently on the run. This comes after he tried to escape from the holding cells at the court. He was caught though and taken to Krugersdorp Correctional Facility the same day, but at the prison he got into a physical altercation with a guard. Both men were seriously injured in the fight and the accused had to be taken to hospital, from where he managed to escape.
