Residents’ fondest memories of Roodepoort

Roodepoort's fondest memories

We asked our readers to take a trip down memory lane and bring us a few souvenirs.

These are some of their fondest memories:

•Dawie Pretorius – “Primary school spring day walk around the lake. Many years ago. In the 80s.”

• Suzanne Behrtel – “Old Horizon Ice Rink. I never understood why they closed it. We were there every weekend, night and day.”

• Esther Sequeira – “The Savoy and Plaza bioscopes in Roodepoort. As well as the Savoy café with the jukebox and puppet orchestra against the wall. The curtain opened as the music started playing with the moving puppets playing on their instruments. Then drawn again as soon as the music stopped playing. R1.00.”

• Keisha Parker – “Mine would be going to the swimming pool at Florida Park. Was so huge and we use to try swim underwater with one breath. Obviously we never made it”.

• Mariette Ackerman – “Wagon Wheel roadhouse opposite West Ridge High with friends eating footlong hotdogs and [drinking] cream soda.”

• Junet Vorster – “Die Royal bioskoop in Goldman Street, Florida. Vir ‘n sjieling (10 sent) om in te gaan het hulle vir jou ‘n koeldrank gebring terwyl [die] prent wys.”

• Bettie Lynch – “”Window shopping” in Roodepoort.”

• Marlene Botha – “Republic Day. Whole school, Laerskool Roodepoort-Wes, walking to Hoërskool Roodepoort for a fun-filled day.”

• Maria Saccone Da Silva – “Putt-putt at Florida Lake.”

• Jacques van der Grijp – “Just 500m north of Westgate was a forest you could get lost in, walk with that pathway to Little Falls… all gone…”

• Sam van der Grijp – “Om met my boetie en ons honde na Skinnersdam toe te gaan en by die waterval te sit! Dit was goeie dae!”

Most readers also said that today their two favourite spots would include the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and Kloofendal Nature Reserve.
