At only 19 years of age, Phumelele Cele is one of the up and coming boxing stars of Witpoortjie Vikings Amatuer Boxing Club. The Princess squatter camp resident fell in love with the sport three years ago and dreams of emulating his heroes, Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali.

“I’ve loved boxing since I was a young child but never got a chance to train in it. I tried karate and other martial arts but they never quite gripped me. However with boxing it was different, I just enjoyed it the second I entered the ring. The boxing bug just bit me,” he said.

Phumelele aspires to be a South African Champion and then move onto the international stage and represent the country in front of millions. But he knows he needs to work hard and have the right attitude to move towards his goal.

“I know that I can succeed and make my mother happy one day, just as she has done for me all my life. All I have to do is to continue improving myself in the ring, work on my fitness and train harder.

Once I succeed, the doors will open for me,” he said.

Phumelele recently won all of his bouts when he participated in the Springs Boxing tournament where he was unrivalled. He is also gunning for the Elite South African boxing title.
