2017 promises to be a year of new starts for the Roodepoort Rugby Club – and they plan to use all the opportunities fully.

The president of the rugby club, Roxy Roux, is optimistic about their plans to restore the club to its former glory. “We were very fortunate to be offered the use of the rugby fields at Hoërskool Roodepoort for our training purposes after we experienced some difficulties at our previous location. The school, in conjunction with the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU), refurbished the main field and we will be using it together with the school,” he said. According to him, the new field will be ready to play on in about two weeks.

According to Roxy, the personnel at Hoërskool Roodepoort have gone out of their way to make them feel welcome and he wants to thank them for accepting the club and its members with open arms.

The club’s committee members have been hard at work during the off season, planning a lot of activities for the players in the coming year. “We will definitely be playing in the Assupol competition. Middelburg rugby club has approached us to arrange a game and Witbank wants us to compete in their rugby tournament. We are just waiting for them to confirm the times, dates and fixtures. We will also be playing quite a few non-league matches during the year,” Roxy said.

The club will once again boast an U/19, an U/21, and several senior teams this year. There are also quite a few exciting prospects being explored for the youth teams (U/8 to U/18).

Roxy said that training started on 9 January and invited everyone who wanted to be part of the club to join them. They train on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm at Hoërskool Roodepoort. “Everyone – young and old – is welcome,” he said.

He concluded by saying, “The club is already starting to grow again in numbers, with a lot of former members returning to the club. We also have some new members from other provinces and clubs. We are going to put Roodepoort Rugby Club on the map again – for all the right reasons.”
