Dead JMPD trainee identified

The Johannesburg Metro Police Officer (JMPD) who died in the motorcycle accident yesterday has been identified as ZP Zwane.

The 36-year-old lived in Orlando East in Soweto and was due to get married this year. He has one child.

According to JMPD’s Edna Mamonyane, a motorist in a bakkie changed lanes without checking the blind spots and clipped the motorcycle Zwane was on, which spun and lost control.

He then collided with the rear-end of a double-cab bakkie. He succumbed to extensive injuries.

The incident occurred on the N1 North before the N17 and Maraisburg Road onramp.

JMPD Superintendant Wayne Minnaar said the unit Zwane worked in was been hit hard by the loss of their friend and colleague.

“This has been hard on the motorcycle unit or metro police mounted unit he was a part of because they’ve lost a colleague and a friend. They are heartbroken,” he said.

Minnaar said a memorial service might be held next week Thursday, but confirmation will be given once preparations have been discussed with the family.

Mamonyane also pleaded with motorists to be more vigilant on the roads and remember to check their mirrors and blind spots.

“If we can learn to look around when we’re driving, especially when we intend to change lanes or turn, these accidents can be avoided. Make sure you look at your rear-view mirror, especially for motorists and bakkie drivers, because someone might be travelling in between the vehicles. We feel that drivers are sometimes careless when it comes to this, as bikers regularly succumb in collisions due to motorists’ negligence,” she said.
